This issue SUPERMAN #199 from August 1967 is the 1st of several races between the Scarlet Speedster and the Man of Steel.
The
classic cover is by the great Silver age art team of Carmen Infantino
and Murphy Anderson. The riveting stark black cover with the bright
red trimmings have fascinated readers for 40 years...and the interior
work was then turned over to...the great Superman artist Curt Swan.
The
race, as you may have known, ends in a tie as planned by the heroes who
want to upset the gambling underworld. A major part of the membeship of
the Justice League and a cast of thousands are in this full book-length
story. It was written by Jim Shooter.
This copy of Superman
#199 was Crazy Ed's personal "raw" copy for many years--we have
assigned it a grade of FN 6.0; it may very well deserve a 6.5 FN+
higher grade but for the corner wear and some edge wear (pictured
below, not a tear--a flaw in the ink?) on the right edge.
The cover colors are still rich, and this issue appears better than our
admittedly conservative grade. The interior was carefully checked for
completeness. The centerfold and staples are in great shape and well
attached. There is visible wear on the top right corner, less in the
bottom right corner and several stress lines in the spine--the black
cover shows everything. The
Back cover is clean, offwhite & unmarked. The interior covers are
cream to off-white and the interior pages are basically off-white..
Overall, it shows normal 40 year plus wear and for the grade range is
still vivid and solid.
