He is the archenemy of Superman and first
appeared in Action Comics #23 (April 1940), and was created by Jerry
Siegel and Joe Shuster. Luthor is described as "a power-mad, evil
scientist" of incredible technological prowess.
His goals typically center on killing Superman, usually as a stepping stone to world
domination.
In
his earliest appearances, Luthor is shown with a full head of
red hair; despite this, the character later became hairless as the
result of an
artist's mistake. In this 1960 story by Jerry Siegel expanded upon
Luthor's origin
and motivations. His story, depicts Luthor and Superboy starting as
adolescent friends in Smallville, very much like the TV series has
depicted from 2001 on!
Issue #271 of Adventure Comics was drawn with great skill by the best Superman artist of the 1960's-Curt Swan.
- The story details Luthor's hair loss and the birthing of his jealousy/hatred for Superboy.
- a
very hard to obtain book in high grade, due to its rich purple cover
and popularity, meaning the average reader from the 1960's DID handle
and read their copy!
This copy of Adventure #271 was Crazy
Ed's personal "reading" copy for many years--we have assigned it a
grade of VG/VG+ 4.0-4.5. The cover colors are still rich, and this
issue would be an excellent collector's copy of this important book.
The interior was carefully checked for completeness. The centerfold and
staples are showing age but still well attached. The
Back cover somewhat discolored and has a pen "X: on the top back
cover. The interior pages are cream to off-white. Overall, it shows
normal 50 year wear and for the grade range is still vivid and solid.
To assist you in evaluating the book, we provide scans as follows:
- front cover and back cover (extra shots of the back cover areas of note)
The
2009 Overstreet guide value in 9.2 Near Mint minus is $450.00 A
collector looking for readable, key Silver age 1st appearances or
Origin issues would be pleased by the overall look of this issue.
